The Let's Read Booster programme continues to go well. Our Three-Step programme, which lays the building blocks for early reading and writing, has been followed this year in 72 primary schools. Termly reports from the School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs) give us feedback and we enjoy hearing of their successes and the challenges they all face. Assessments on progress in the Booster programme will be carried out before the end of the term.
Schools have recently enjoyed an inter schools competition in their circuits, with each winning school being rewarded with the greatest prize - a football!
We are now preparing an extended programme for upper primary classes. This will build on the Three Steps for lower primary children and aims to develop extended writing skills, more advanced phonics and increased use of our reading books for the older classes.
Thanks to John Agangmikre who is leading the programme, his colleagues who are training the teachers in school groups and all the teachers who are committed to helping their children catch up with their literacy skills after nine months out of the classroom in 2021 because of Covid-19.
Roland, one of the teachers taking part in the Booster, emailed us from his school in Chiana: "We have done let's Read booster programme today with our CS who took us through the training. It was very excited to everyone who participated, a lot of thoughts, how to teach letter sounds, learn talk do understand and to also choose to teach 3 letters every week to also help them in their good writing skills. In fact we all enjoyed the training especially corrections of the letter sounds. "

About Let's Read
The main aim of Let's Read is to improve the quality of teaching and learning in literacy in the schools
We do this by encouraging a more active teaching style which leads to more effective learning for children
We run workshops for teachers and work with them in schools to model good teaching. We assess children's progress during and at the end of the school year. We are gradually training the teachers to take over the responsibility for assessing progress themselves and to see assessment as a tool to improve their teaching.
